Blender Work

28/10/2024

I decided to follow my final sketch pretty close with some minor changes. I added wooden blinds to the windows because the way I had it prior was not practical. I removed some details that the original drawing had and replaced them with others that made more sense in the 3D environment.

I ran into some problems with the model not rendering after a certain distance which forced me to get creative with the background. I covered it by using trees I modelled as well as a blender sapling generator.

I made all the buildings in the background by simplifying the gallery model and changing colours. I also didn't use any lanterns on them to keep the focus on the gallery.

When I was doing the textures I messed it up and the shading stopped working as it was supposed to, it was an easy fix once I realised what was making the textures weird but it spooked me for about an hour.

I originally wanted to make almost half the building overgrown but I had to do only the one row of ivy that you can see on the final model. (fun fact with the ivy the model is 5,612,427 vertices and without it its 141,691 vertices)

When I was deciding on what text I should use for the banners I decided on traditional chinese (it's what google calls traditional mandarin). However, I was told by one of my classmates from Singapore that I should change it to Malay. I was told this 24 hours before the deadline when I still needed to make this blog and additional annotations for the work I will submit. Needless to say that after finding out that google doesn't translate Malay into its alphabet and finding one I could understand was difficult I decided not to change the text. But I do have the proper name in Malay it would be: Galeri Singa Ikan Bulan.

The name means, Moon Fish Lion Gallery

I would say I'm pretty happy with the model. I can imagine it in some animated show. It was really interesting to try and work on such a large scale.
