I made 49 designs for this project. There is almost no perspective work because I wanted to concentrate on the silhouettes. There are some designs that were inspired by the shape of a fish. Most designs try to incorporate the canal in some way.
I decided to follow my final sketch pretty close with some minor changes. I added wooden blinds to the windows because the way I had it prior was not practical. I removed some details that the original drawing had and replaced them with others that made more sense in the 3D environment.
Animating the little girl was surprisingly difficult as her rig worked completely differently from every other rig that was used in the project. I started working with her about half a week before the deadline because I was done with all my book sections and the others hated working with the model. Her interacting with the environment could get...
For the elderly librarian we used the model that was used in class to teach us how to animate. It was recommended to us by the second year students who used these models last year and remembered them being very flexible and easy to change. The model was definitely much easier for me to model than the one I set my eyes on initially....
Bobby Lonesome is the main character of the movie. He is an old book in a messy library and he is misplaced by the old librarian. He is also the base for all the other book characters as they are all edits of his model.
It's hard to describe why the cooking section felt so difficult from storyboard to animation for me, it could be because I wast quite sure how to capture the chaotic energy with books on shelf. To me both cooking and bookshelves are about being organised and the cooking section in our movie is anything but that. It's an energetic mess...
Romance was the first animation I have done for this movie. It took me about two days to make the three shots that it's made of.
This was the test animation that was accompanied by a step by step lecture from the teachers. It's a simple walk animation but it was really good to grasp the concept of how 3D animating works and how it's different from 2D which I was more familiar with.
In the western section storyboard there is a tumbleweed going across the scene. No one in the group was sure how to make it but then I had an idea and it actually worked and turned out pretty well.
I made cover art for some of the books that felt too bland without them.
The only thing I managed to figure out how to change about the model (Ellie) we were using for the movie was how to change the hair. When I tried to change anything else it would clip through itself.
I designed some of the books for the different sections though I don't think many of them were used.
During the writing process there was talk of what characters would show up and why.
At some point during the talk of what the library needs it was decided that one of those things was a sculpture of a head and since I wanted to practise making organic shapes in Blender I volunteered for the job. The result is mildly horrifying but that is part of its charm.
I made all the lamps on the set. At first there was talk of having the lamps be made of stained glass but that was quickly scrapped as that is very hard to accomplish in eevee.
There isn't much to say about the vases, grab a reference, try to stick to it and make them reflective, that's it congratulations you have a vase.
The globe is the only object I made for this project with a pre made texture.
The script customising was really important for me. I had a hard time reading the script when it was only black and white. The first thing I tried was to circle the separate section and it helped a little but it was better when I highlighted the sections with different colours.
